Brass is any alloy of copper and zinc; the proportions of zinc and copper can be varied to create a range of brasses with varying properties. In comparison, bronze is principally an alloy of copper and tin. Despite this distinction, some types of brasses are called bronzes. Brass is a substitutional alloy. It is used for decoration for its bright gold-like appearance; for applications where low friction is required such as locks, gears, bearings, doorknobs, ammunition, and valves; for plumbing and electrical applications; and extensively in musical instruments such as horns and bells for its acoustic properties. It is also used in zippers. Brass has a muted yellow color, somewhat similar to gold. It is relatively resistant to tarnishing, and is often used as decoration and for coins. In antiquity, polished brass was often used as a mirror. Brass has likely been known to humans since prehistoric times, even before zinc itself was discovered. It was produced by melting copper together with calamine, a zinc ore. In the German village of Breinigerberg, an ancient Roman settlement was discovered where a calamine ore mine existed. During the melting process, the zinc is extracted from the calamine and mixes with the copper. Pure zinc, on the other hand, has too low a boiling point to have been produced by ancient metalworking techniques. The many references to "brass" appearing throughout the King James Bible are thought to signify another bronze alloy, or copper, rather than the strict modern definition of brass. Your local grocery or hardware store should sell a product called Brasso. It is made for cleaning brass. All you have to do is follow the instructions on the can, and make sure that you use a really soft cloth for rubbing it clean...I really works and can bring the most tarnished of brass to a beautiful shine Answered by littlemarjie2 - Wed Aug 9 23:41:34 2006 What is the best way to strip paint off of a brass HO scale model train locomotive? Q. I recently aqcuired some brass HO scale engines. I have never had brass, and the paint schemes that the previous owner had do not match my era. How do I strip the paint effectively without obviously damaging anything? Thanks! Now, is there anything that I can use to dip the shells with? There are alot of small detail pieces, and rubbing them is not going to work as the small parts will most likely break or bend. I do not know what kind of paint it is either. I would think that there has got to be something that I can use just to dip the shells?? Asked by Kayla - Sat Dec 1 00:57:04 2007 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments A. I've heard of people dipping the model into a bucket of pine-sol solution! Let it soak for a while, and watch the paint just peel off!! Have "HEavy Metal with a line through it, and "Weighty Brass" written in instead. or "I've got a Big Brass and I'm proud of it." or "...and I know how to use it."
