Orthodox Judaism is a formulation of Judaism that adheres to a relatively strict interpretation and application of the laws and ethics canonized in the Talmudic texts ("Oral Torah") and subsequently developed and applied by the later authorities known as the Gaonim, Rishonim, and Acharonim. Generally, Orthodox Judaism consists of two different streams, the Modern Orthodox and the Ultra Orthodox.

Conversion to Orthodox Judaism from Reform?
Q. I am a convert to Reform Judaism (it was the only synagogue in my area). I will be moving to NYC next year and am wondering if it would be possible to "upgrade" my conversion to Orthodox and what that would entail. Thanks.

A. LOL - you can absolutely 'upgrade' to Orthodox Judaism, but it (obviously) isn't called that. Basically, it would require undergoing full conversion a second time. However, assuming your Reform conversion was reasonably thorough, the second time around should be much easier for you - presumably you now already know the holidays, basic Hebrew, and a lot of Jewish history and dogma - so your studies will be geared toward filling in the gaps when it comes to halacha and Orthodox practices. You are also more likely to be taken seriously by the rabbi you ask to sponsor you, as you have already more than proven your commitment to am yisroel. Do you know where in NYC you will be moving? Your best bet is to find a synagogue whose rabbi you… [cont.]

I know that converting to orthodox Judaism is long and you have to study with a Rabbi...How much would he ?
Q. charge? And overall, how much would someone spend in the entire conversion process?

A. How long? Same question as "How long is a piece of string?". The reality is that it is dependant on the person's prior knowledge and lifestyle. The more the person has to learn and take-on, the longer the process. As a general rule of thumb, most Batei Dinim (Rabbinical courts) will require a two year period from the start to the finish- though this can vary quite dramatically- I have known someone to take 5 years to finish the course since they had time problems with classes etc- and someone that was converted overnight (a strange case- someone studying in Yeshivah for smichah (rabbinical ordination) discovered their mother had a reform conversion and thus he was not actually halachicly Jewish by Orthodox standards. Since he already… [cont.]

In Orthodox Judaism, what are the circumstances which will permit birth control to be used and what types?
Q. Can anyone provide a complete list of general exceptions to the use of birth control and what types are permitted in any type of hierarchical order? I realize many situations are fact specific, but can someone provide a broad general list that could allow one to get started with an answer to this difficult question.

A. If there is some sort of health concern at that point for either the man or the woman in being pregnant or caring for a child. That could be mental health or psychological health. It could be the imminent stress even of having a child while in school still or having a very low source of income making having children at that time very stressful. But all of these "heteirim" (allowing it to be permissible) are for a certain set period of time usually decided by the couple's Rabbi. If they feel they need more time on the birth control, they need to re-ask and the Rabbi may say no. Also, the reason "we're not ready for kids" is usually not considered good enough because the retort is "then do not get married." *EDIT* To expound on what… [cont.]
