How many calories does your body burn per hour?
Q. Okay, I know you burn more calories while active, but how many does your body burn even if you're not exercising?
Asked by Hulkzilla - Sat Jan 10 15:34:39 2009 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. This has got to do with your basal metabolic rate (BMR). It's the calories you burn while at rest and while you're carrying on your normal daily activities like breathing, studying, watching TV, reading, sweating, watering plants, cooking or working at your desk... In short, the calories you need to keep your body function in a normal, healthy manner. BMR depends on gender and body weight. Here's a guide on how to determine BMR:

Q. I want to know how much calories your body would regularly burn without excercise.

A. You probably burn 1700-2200 calories a day, depending on your size...see the calcualtor below. The calories you burn in a day is called your Basal Metaboic Rate (BMR). Hope that helped. - Mike

will my body burn muscle instead of fat for energy while i run?
Q. K well the last time i ate was 7pm last night. I was on yahoo answers and somebody wrote a post that if you last eat at 7pm and eat again at 7am then thats 12 hours without food, meaning your body is in starvation mode. I just ate oatmeal and i am eatiing strawberries + an apple. At 9:00am i'm going to go running, will my body burn my muscles instead of my fat?

A. Not to start with, but after about 30 minutes (if you havent eaten breakfast) it will start to tap into your fat reserves. Anything after 45 minutes and it will start to tap into your muscle reserves for fuel and energy.

Does the body burn more fat exercising when it's hot or cold?
Q. I've heard that warm muscles burn fat more effectively, but I've also heard that when it's cold the body burns more calories trying to maintain a normal body temperature. Which is true?
Asked by Caitlin - Wed Jul 16 22:04:22 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. ok here is your answer. When the temperature outside is hot like during the mid summer, yes your body will naturally desire less food and more liquid, resulting in either an easy maintanence of weight or a weight loss of some sort. When the temperature gets cold in the winter, lets take the midwest for example (California doesn't count) the body naturally wants to hold onto weight or pack on the "winter 10" to keep warm. So there you go, it is much easier to lose and burn in the summer than in the winter.

How does the body "decide" which fat stores to burn when losing weight?
Q. While working out and watching my diet, I shed fat everywhere except my belly. Does the body burn certain stores of fat more readily than others, or perhaps burn fat stores in a certain order?
Asked by Chris C - Fri Jan 15 19:13:17 2010 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It depends on where your body is genetically inclined to hold onto fat. Some people it's the gut, others its the man boobs lol... Just keep it up and eventually the fat from your stomach will go away. I myself hold a lot of my fat in the love handles and legs, but through years of eating right and working out constantly I got rid of it :D

How many, on average, calories does your body burn on normal daily activities?
Q. hey. on average how many calories does your body burn, doing everyday tasks. or better how many calories on average does the average person burn daily without working out?
Asked by tanjha - Fri Sep 26 00:22:37 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. This depends on what you define as normal everyday tasks and your age...if you're a desk jockey, 1200 or so, if you work inventory/stock then maybe 1400-1500, if you work in landscaping/carpentry, etc over 2000. Lumberjacks were known to consume over 10,000 calories in a day and still stay VERY trim. Oh yeah...age...if you are under 25 or so, your bones are still finishing up the final details, so you'll be burning more calories. This is the main reason why suddenly after over 2 decades of pigging out and not gaining weight, there is a sudden shift and the same food causes us to balloon.

A. In your body, fat is long term storage for energy- it gets converted and burnt after the sugars have been used.

When you don't eat does your body burn fat first or muscle?
Q. My friend is obsessed with losing weight. I think that she might be anorexic. She eats 800 calories a day. She says she enters starvation mode. She says that her body muscle burns her muscle instead of her fat. I tell her that your body has to burn the fat first to start burning the muscle. She doesnt believe me. So can I get some professional information or aid. This is directed to nutritionist, dieticians, etc, but anymore could be helpful!

A. Your body never burns one primary fuel source. It burns carbs, protein, and fats at the same time. Your body would be burning muscle and fat, you'd lose mostly fat but a good chunk of muscle as well.

When you starve yourself, why does your body burn muscle instead of fat?
Q. Why is it that the body will start to burn muscle instead of fat when calorie intake is reduced dramatically? If this is true, why is one of the criteria for being diagnosed as anorexic having an extremely low body fat percentage, rather than an extremely low muscle mass percentage?
Asked by Tchau Bela - Sun May 23 13:55:12 2010 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Muscle is highly metabolic, meaning it requires energy to maintain. Fat, on the other hand, is inert and requires little to no energy to maintain. When your body is starved, it shuts down, and to preserve itself, it gets rid of anything and everything that requires energy to maintain. Therefore, your muscles go and your fat stays. Being diagnosed as anorexic requires very low body weight, not low muscle mass percentage.

how many calories does the body burn a day without exercise?
Q. if i burn an extra 1000 calories through excercise surley this with the normal calories the body burns will lose weight?
Asked by nadiah e - Sat Jun 23 06:51:29 2007 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. A pound of fat you need to lose is 3,500 calories you need to burn extra. If you burn an extra 1,000 calories through exercise, you could lose a pound of fat every 3 and a half days unless you eat too much (about 2 pounds/week). How many calories your body burns a day is based on your gender and your weight: Calculate your BMR (Basal Metaboolic Rate): BMR: women: lbs x 0.453 = kilograms x 7.18 + 795 BMR: men: lbs x 0.453 = kilograms x 10.2 + 879

How much calories does your body burn without exercise?(a normal day)?
Q. I was wondering how much caloreis you burn when you don't exercise, just "normally". I run and burn 500-700 calories a day, and do 40 sit ups every 2-3 hours. Plus I do weight lifting(not excessvie, but a good amount every 2-4 hours) I wanted to know how much calories my body burns off by itself to figure out how much calories I actually burn a day. Thanks!
Asked by Chris P - Wed Aug 13 14:21:11 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Google, "BMR Test". It tells you approximately how much calories you'd burn a day just by lying down. But it's with a normal metabolism, and a person like me, with a slow metabolism, would burn less calories then it says.

Is it true that if you eat more meals a day ( 5 to 6) Your body will start to burn off stored fat?
Q. I have been eating healthier and exercising more and drinking alot of water and juices. But I'm not budging on the scales. I have been doing nutritional research alot and they say that if you eat 5 to 6 small meals a day that your body will have more energy and not store fat. So in tern will that start to burn the fat that you already have stored? It would make sense. Like how your body will retain water especially when it is not getting it everyday and enough of it,and stores it because your bosy goes into survival mode. So won't that be the same truth to eating? Because we all know that if we dont eat enough we will not lose the weight, which I have discovered myself. So if your body is storing fat is is in survival mode, or we eat too… [cont.]

Asked by kelly1985 - Tue Aug 7 11:43:04 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. When your body moves (or any cell in your body does any type of work ) it needs energy. The amount of energy needed is measured as a unit of heat or a calorie. The fuel to produce this energy comes from several sources, mostly fat and carbs (glucose), and occasionally amino acids (protein). How and when fat is burned (or metabolized to provide energy for the body) and how that affects body fat levels and weight is a very complex area of physiology research. There have been hundreds, maybe thousands, of studies exploring the utilization of fat for energy under a variety of different conditions. There is still much to be understood, but this is how we know it works so far: Whether you are watching TV or running around a track, the fuel… [cont.]

How many Calories does your body automatically burn each day, without exercising?
Q. Hello, I have been on a diet for about a week now, I am always up on my feet, im working on getting a treadmill, I have been eating about 1200 calories a day, I know that your body burns calories no matter what anyways, I am 5' 10" and I weigh 156 lbs, I basically just need to get toned, so if anyone knows how many calories your body burns automatically, or if i am doing anything wrong, please let me know. Thanks!

A. That depends on your resting/basal metabolic rate. You're probably actually undereating, though. 1200 calories isn't much for an active individual.

What does my body burn anything when I become cold?
Q. Recently I have been going surfing early in the morning where the ocean is numbing. (It also doesn't help that my wetsuit has some holes in it). I was wondering if our body burns any significant amount of calories trying to keep us warm or if our body holds on to everything we have in order to stay warm. Thank you so much in advance!
Asked by beezyfrends - Sat Jan 3 20:50:02 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Yes, absolutely we burn calories trying to stay warm! As witness trying to lose weight in the Summer is austere, while it is much easier to lose weight in the winter. On this wise, those wishing to lose weight may well be more successful if they don't sleep as warm, either from a lighter dinner, or manipulation of the night insulation/ room temperature setting. The calorie specifically is a measure of heat energy, like the BTU of furnaces.

how many calories does your body burn naturally throughout the day?
Q. so i've been told to burn 500 more then what i consume. so if i'm only consuming 1200 per day, does that mean that i have to work out for several hours to burn 1700 calories, or how many calories does you body use just to function throughout the day? i don't mind working out, i work out for at least 2 hours a day jogging and light weights and mostly cardio, but i'm just curious as to how hard i should push myself.

A. Know that 1 lb. of fat is equal to 3,500 calories. So if you eat 500 calories less per day for a week than you normally would (by either cutting back or changing what you eat or even by burning 500 calories from exercise) that is 3,500 calories and you should lose 1 lb. that week. I know that does not sound like a lot, but it is a proven fact that you should not lose more than 1-3 lbs. per week because it is not safe nor does it stay off. If you work to lose 1-3 lbs a week then it is much more likely to be the safe way and will stay off for long-term if you continue to live a healthy lifestyle. There is a formula you can use to calculate an estimate of how many calories you would need to eat every day to either maintain your current… [cont.]
