How do I calculate calories burned on and AIRDYNE?
Q. I have an old AIRDYNE . The on/off switch (battery cover) is missing, so I've been using an LCD clock with "seconds" displayed. This is working fine, but I want to be able to calculate calories burned by RPM's.

What is the scientific technology & process used to calculate calories burned?
Q. I understand about calories expended versus calories taken in. I have seen all the charts that tell you how many calories are burned in a wide variety of activities...from housework, to yardwork, to dancing, climbing stairs, etc. What I'm trying to find out is HOW are these calculations done? Is there someone with a clipboard measuring calories expended during sex to establish that standard? And if so how is he measuring it? Off-the-wall example, I know...but that's what I'm trying to learn. Thanks.

A. > Is there someone with a clipboard measuring calories expended Close. It's measured indirectly by oxygen consumption, which means the participant has to wear a mask while performing the activity. Where do they get these volunteers? Colleges. To take certain courses at certain universities, you have to sign up to be a "guinea pig" for a certain number of hours. Yuck.

how to calculate calories burned?
Q. I already use the online calculators to find my calories burned for "normal" exercises but is there a way to calculate, on my own, how many calories I burn while exercising? I like to do a lot of different exercises but I can't always find the name of these exercises on the online calculators so I have no idea how many cals I am burning. Anyone know of an equation/method of figuring out how to calculate calories burned? I don't want to buy one of those calorie counters if I can help it.

A. Although the relationship of heart rate to energy expenditure may be highly significant in a single subject at any one time, it can vary quite considerably both between individuals and within one individual under different conditions. In order to deal with these problems and increase the precision of the method, it is necessary first to establish heart rates and associated oxygen consumption rates for each subject for various levels of physical exertion. One must then develop a regression equation for each subject in order to estimate energy expenditure for monitored activities. Typically, Energy expenditure (kcal/min) = 4.92*V*(20.93-2%)/100, where V = the corrected volume of expired air per minute. In other words, you'd have to… [cont.]

A. Ok when walking at a brisk pace of 3.5 phm, you burn roughly (0.035 x minutes) cal/ lb of your body weight. For 4.5 mph, it's 0.048 x minutes. So for example, for 40 minutes at 3.5 mph, you (at 295 lbs) are burning approx. 413 calories, and your husband (at 160 lbs) is burning approx. 224 cal. Hope this helps!

How does my elliptical machine calculate how many calories I have burned?
Q. I never entered my height or weight. I just set the resistance and incline.
Asked by I Love Howie Carr - Sun Nov 2 20:10:04 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Its just a guess based on the speed and resistance. Its more accurate when you enter your weight and it uses your heart rate, but they are always way off. They ALWAYS show too much, ask any trainer at the gym, they will tell you the same thing. Its impossible to guess how many calories someone is burning accurately. A bodybuilder with a ton of muscle is burning much much more than a fat guy or a small petite girl.

My exercise bike doesn't have a way to properly calculate calories, so I don't know how many I am burning!?
Q. Hi, I have an exercise bike that calculates pulse, calories burned, miles per hour, and distance. I also have a treadmill outside in my GYM but my bike is indoors and I can watch TV while I exercise to keep me entertained so I like to do that most. However, it does not have a weight input thing like my treadmill does. In 9 minutes, it said that I burned around 60 calories when on a treadmill with my weight input, it said I burned maybe 20-30. I am on the smaller side (107 pounds and 5'3") and it takes us more work to burn calories than someone with more weight. I think that the exercise bike is set for a person around 150-200 pounds or something, because in one hour it said that I burned 600 calories on the bike. Ha! One hour on the… [cont.]

A. Counters on any exercise equipment are notoriously inaccurate. They are just a guesstimate, and don't even pretend to be close. Your best bet is to ignore everything on the bike's readout except for the timer, and then go to my-calorie-counter.com, which will let you set up a free account and track your calories burned according to your height, weight, and goals. Or, you can learn how to calculate mets, and keep a table of them handy. I personally find it easier to use a website, or software (I use Weight-by-date Pro, but that costs money. The website I named is free).

It helps you keep track of your exercise, calories consumed, goals, and a million other things. You can print out graphs, bar charts, etc. It is very user-friendly. Believe me, if I can use it, anyone can! Other websites are good, too. I especially like HungryGirl and Weight Watchers. is this correct (calories burned)?
Q. Okay so today I went on the treadmill and did a workout. The treadmill was a really nice one and asked me to enter my weight (110 lbs.) to calculate calories burned. I did a jog/run workout at speeds between 5 MPH and 6.5 MPH for about an hour. And the treadmill was at a 1% incline the whole time. The treadmill said that I burned 576 calories. Is this accurate since I entered my weight prior to doing it?

A. Yes. I would say it is almost completely accurate since you entered your weight, as the number of calories burned varies depending on weight. 576 sounds just about right to me :)
