Calories Burned?
Q. Seeing as how i dont have a treadmill at home, i decided to jog on place. How many calories would you guess i burned jogging in place for 20 minutes with two 5lb weights in my hands(i was sweating quite a bit). How about if i jumped rope for 20 minutes?

A. It all depends on your body, everyone's different. Jogging is a good way, but I can't tell you exactly. Jumping rope is good cardiovascular exercise and that always helps.

How many calories are burned during a body sculpting class?
Q. I don't know what to fill it in as. Circuit training says an hour would be around 450 calories burned which I don't think is correct. How much would an hour of body sculpting workout class burn? I would say it's a moderate intensity.
Asked by A - Fri May 29 14:29:45 2009 - - 2 Answers - 1 Comments

A. For a 200 pound person, it would burn around 275, depending on how much you were continually moving. Obviously, if you weigh less or more, that number will increase or decrease.

calories burned is the same if heart rate is equal no matter what physical exercise it is?
Q. If you are running 7mph and your heart rate = X, and you compare that with another exercise which brings your heart rate up to the same number, will the calories burned between those two exercises be the same... even though the exercise might be quite different?

What is the scientific technology & process used to calculate calories burned?
Q. I understand about calories expended versus calories taken in. I have seen all the charts that tell you how many calories are burned in a wide variety of activities...from housework, to yardwork, to dancing, climbing stairs, etc. What I'm trying to find out is HOW are these calculations done? Is there someone with a clipboard measuring calories expended during sex to establish that standard? And if so how is he measuring it? Off-the-wall example, I know...but that's what I'm trying to learn. Thanks.

A. > Is there someone with a clipboard measuring calories expended Close. It's measured indirectly by oxygen consumption, which means the participant has to wear a mask while performing the activity. Where do they get these volunteers? Colleges. To take certain courses at certain universities, you have to sign up to be a "guinea pig" for a certain number of hours. Yuck.

How many calories burned while swimming a mile?
Q. What would be a fairly good estimate for the number of calories burned if you swam a 50 minute mile medley (mostly breast and free style, but also back and fly) when you used a kick board and a leg-clampy-thing? I'm not looking for an exact number, but a fairly small range would be appreciated. Thanks!

When counting calories burned do you only count the calories from exercise or RMR or both?
Q. When I'm filling out my food journal I need to know how to properly count calories burned. I know that you can find out how many calories you burn for an exercise. But do you add that total to your resting metabolic rate or just use the exercise #? Do you have a # on days you don't exercise?
Asked by cuecue - Fri Apr 17 09:11:44 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. If you are eating very little and exercising a lot, you may have enough of a deficit in your calories to lose weight without the need to carefully count them. However, deficits that large tend to leave you hungry, and they can be hard to maintain. For this reason, many people choose to create a smaller deficit so that they are only a few hundred calories short per day, which results in slow but painless weight loss. Unfortunately, in order to maintain such a small deficit consistently, you have to count calories; otherwise it's too easy to go over your limit, with such a small margin to work with.

A. hun, you should only do that like once every other day. doing 10 miles a day can be harmful to your muscles. you need to rest your muscles or they will get overworked and if you tear a muscle from working hard it will never heal if you don't give your muscles a break and get bigger. take it easy. your only 11.

How many calories burned equals 1 pound lost?
Q. And would it be as effective if half those calories were burned one day and half the next day?
Asked by * *anna* * - Wed May 13 20:06:27 2009 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It's 3,500 calories in a pound of fat. That means a total caloric deficit of 3,500-- whether that's done through eating less or exercise, that's the amount you need to take down. Now, you shouldn't be running enough to have a 3,500 calorie deficit. Just not healthy for you. You would ideally burn around 500 calories a day, seven days a week (through a combination of dieting and exercise) that would make you lose a pound each week. It's unhealthy to lose more than two pounds during any given week, as a general rule of thumb.

How accurate are those exercise machines at the gym that tell you your calories burned?
Q. Are they spot on or is there a better way to calculate calories burned?
Asked by jasemuk - Mon Apr 27 06:39:25 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. No, they are not spot on at all. They provide nothing more than a rough estimate, at best. The amount of energy you consume or expend (measured in calories) when engaged in physical activity depends on a large number of factors which the simple computers on exercise equipment just don't take into account. Even things like the time of day, temperature and humidty have an effect. Use their readings as a guide from one day to the next but don't treat the readings as bang on accurate because they can be out by quite a wide margin. They have a broad tendency to over estimate for the unfit and under estimate for the very fit.

A. if ur machine cant do it for u, u can always pick up a heartrate calculator and keep track of ur heartrate during exercise then afterwards get online and figure out how many calories u burned by searching for some calculator that tells u how many calories u burn at "X" heartrate with "X" body weight, age and heigh. once u do it once u wont have to do it again. unless u chose to work at a different heart rate target. if u consistently workout with a target heartrate of say 175 then try to always keep it there so having to recalculate ur calories each time will be easier.. ur choice,

How many calories burned in a 24hour fitness class?
Q. I just did a 1 hour 24S.E.T. class (like a cardio-lifting class, basically). It was exhausting, and my muscles are all shaking. I'm just curious as to how many calories it likely burned. I'm 5'9, 135 lbs. Thanks! Also, does anyone know the benefit of doing exercise class versus just exercising on your own? I eat very well, thank you. Plenty of slow-burning carbs and lean proteins. And I drink Crystal Lite like it's my job.

A. I am an instructor that teaches 24SET. The generic answer to your question is you are likely buring in the 400 calories range. But that is just an estimate as each individual is different. To find out how much you really are burning, you can invest in a heart rate monitor or BodyBugg that is sold thru 24 Hour Fitness. To answer your other question, the benefit in doing exercise classes is that you have others in the class with you that boost your motivation vs. being out on those tredmill on your own which you would have to be pretty disciplined in keeping up the intensity by yourself! Also you have the instructor in class that WILL help you out on form/techniques to make sure that you are doing the exercise correctly! I hope my answer… [cont.]

The following healthy living recommendations will help you if you re trying to lose weight, tone up your muscles, have aspirations of building lean muscle mass, are attempting to get a wash board stomach, or just want to feel better: *1) Burn more calories then you're consuming everyday and measure your results using the following formula: Calories Consumed minus Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) minus Physical Activity. This will allow you to easily calculate this formula, set goals, log your daily calorie consumption, and register your physical activities. *2) Eat natural and organic foods found on… [cont.]
