How do you remove chewing gum from polar fleece?
Q. I have this polar fleece blanket that somehow managed to get chewing gum stuck to it. As polar fleece is quite fluffy, the chewing gum has adhered itself very well. I've tried the usual stain removers and laundry detergent in an attempt to break it down, but it didn't work. Is there a safe, effective way to remove, break down or dissolve the gum? Without ruining my blanket? :)

A. There is always goo gone. It's oily and pretty good at breaking the hold of gum.

What are the main ingredients that make up chewing gum?
Q. How is it that we can chew, and chew, and chew bubble gum, and chewing gum, and it never loses its texture. How is chewing gum made, and what ingredients are used to make it?

A. Up until WWII, chewing gum was made of a substance called chicle mixed with flavorings. Chicle is a latex sap that comes from the sapodilla tree (native to Central America). In other words, chicle is a form of rubber. Just like rubber bands don't dissolve when you chew them, neither does chicle. Chicle is a good bit softer than rubber bands and happens to soften more when it gets warm in your mouth. If you freeze chicle with ice, it gets very stiff -- chicle hardens and softens over a pretty narrow temperature range. After WWII, chemists learned how to make artificial gum bases to replace chicle. These gum bases are essentially synthetic rubbers that have the same temperature profile as chicle. Gum bases (either natural or artificial)… [cont.]

A. You could put an ice cube on it. Sometimes when it gets really hard, it will just peel off. Also, you might try some of the products that are on the market for getting sticky things off like Goop Off. Hope this helps!

How can I get over my fear of chewing gum?
Q. I once had a cavity on one of my molars. A bad dentist didn't clean my molar right, and left germs in there before applying a filling. After some months, my molar was getting eaten by cavities from the inside out without me knowing it. One day, I was chewing gum like I used to love when my molar just got crushed. It was such a terrible experience! With another dentist, I had to get a porcelain incrustation. I lost like half of my molar. It wasn't the chewing gum's fault, that molar had been getting hollow for some time. But sometimes I really feel like chewing gum, but as soon I put one on my mouth, I get all scared and just can't chew anymore. How can I chew gum again?
Asked by SwimGuy - Mon Jul 2 15:08:33 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. This is a tough one. It seems like you know that it is an irrational feeling. You could try what is sometimes called "flooding," have a friend with you, tell them not to let you stop chewing gum no matter how scared you get. Basically force yourself to chew gum so that in the end you can realize that you can chew gum without hurting yourself.

What do you think about chewing gum with Artificial sweeteners? Especially if you life a healthy lifestyle?
Q. I buy the real expensive organic/natural gum online. But the flavor doesn't last long worth a flip, I tried the gum "Layers from Trident" today and i really liked it. Thing is it has sorbitol, and Aspatame. Which I know are like the worst artificial sweeteners possible. Do you know any brands that have a long lasting flavor to it :-/ And what do you think about chewing gum with Artificial sweeteners, do you do it even though you live a active healthy lifestyle?

A. I try to avoid artificial sweeteners because they're just nasty. Check out B-Fresh gum, which is sugar-free and sweetened with Xylitol. If you have dogs, though, keep it out of their reach; Xylitol is toxic to dogs.

Q. My husband left a full pack of spearmint chewing gum in his uniform pocket and i washed them with all of my other clothes and so now my clothes smell like chewing gum but also there is gum spread out all over my clothes how do i get it off??? its really sticky and kinda spread out not just in big clumps.???

A. It sounds like alot of gum though for the usual ice cube trick. Try getting the clothes thoroughly wet, then put them in a bag and freeze that way. Next day open it up and crack it all open and see if you can chip it off that way. Follow up with a machine wash in warm or hot, if you can (not bleeding colors) :) Good luck! * The clothes that smell of chewing gum can be washed in warm water with a bit of baking soda and your detergent, wash as usual.

What happens to chewing gum when it passes its sell by date?
Q. I've got a few packs of chewing gum that went off date in 2008, and I was curious what happens to it, I have had some of them and they're no different then they were 2 years ago. Is there any way they could make you ill?
Asked by Matt Q - Sat Jan 9 11:30:07 2010 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments
A. I can't give you any technical answers, but I find expired gum to be very tacky and sticky. When you put the stick in your mouth, it is hardened and chewier...not in a good way. And I find the taste to be off. I have to admit I'm only speaking for Extra Bubblemint gum, my favourite brand and flavour. This is how the gum texture and taste changes after the due date.
