What are the main ingredients that make up chewing gum?
Q. How is it that we can chew, and chew, and chew bubble gum, and chewing gum, and it never loses its texture. How is chewing gum made, and what ingredients are used to make it?

A. Up until WWII, chewing gum was made of a substance called chicle mixed with flavorings. Chicle is a latex sap that comes from the sapodilla tree (native to Central America). In other words, chicle is a form of rubber. Just like rubber bands don't dissolve when you chew them, neither does chicle. Chicle is a good bit softer than rubber bands and happens to soften more when it gets warm in your mouth. If you freeze chicle with ice, it gets very stiff -- chicle hardens and softens over a pretty narrow temperature range. After WWII, chemists learned how to make artificial gum bases to replace chicle. These gum bases are essentially synthetic rubbers that have the same temperature profile as chicle. Gum bases (either natural or artificial)… [cont.]

A. You could put an ice cube on it. Sometimes when it gets really hard, it will just peel off. Also, you might try some of the products that are on the market for getting sticky things off like Goop Off. Hope this helps!

How can I get over my fear of chewing gum?
Q. I once had a cavity on one of my molars. A bad dentist didn't clean my molar right, and left germs in there before applying a filling. After some months, my molar was getting eaten by cavities from the inside out without me knowing it. One day, I was chewing gum like I used to love when my molar just got crushed. It was such a terrible experience! With another dentist, I had to get a porcelain incrustation. I lost like half of my molar. It wasn't the chewing gum's fault, that molar had been getting hollow for some time. But sometimes I really feel like chewing gum, but as soon I put one on my mouth, I get all scared and just can't chew anymore. How can I chew gum again?

A. This is a tough one. It seems like you know that it is an irrational feeling. You could try what is sometimes called "flooding," have a friend with you, tell them not to let you stop chewing gum no matter how scared you get. Basically force yourself to chew gum so that in the end you can realize that you can chew gum without hurting yourself.

Q. I've got a few packs of chewing gum that went off date in 2008, and I was curious what happens to it, I have had some of them and they're no different then they were 2 years ago. Is there any way they could make you ill?

A. I can't give you any technical answers, but I find expired gum to be very tacky and sticky. When you put the stick in your mouth, it is hardened and chewier...not in a good way. And I find the taste to be off. I have to admit I'm only speaking for Extra Bubblemint gum, my favourite brand and flavour. This is how the gum texture and taste changes after the due date.

A. Did you already wash and dry it? That will make it harder to get anything out... If there is still gum, put the entire piece of clothing into the freezer - let it freeze solid and in 24 hrs, you will be able to chip and peel the gum off the material. If there is stain from the dyes in the gum or sweet stuff in it, then try soaking it with a pre-wash before you wash it. Don't do any drying in the hot dryer though until the stain is out - if you dry it before getting the stain all the way out, the heat will set the stain and it might not ever come out.

Can chewing gum cause someone to break out in a rash?
Q. A couple of months ago I started to get rashes on my elbows and eyelids all of a sudden, they sort of look like psoriasis rashes or hives. I'd never been diagnosed with that or any other skin disorder, but a few months ago I started chewing a lot of gum to keep my breath fresh while I'm outside, and sometimes inside the house too. So I'm thinking I'll probably stop chewing gum for a while to see if that helps, but tell me what you think.

A. Sounds like hives (psoriasis wouldn't come and go). If you are allergic to something in the gum, that could trigger hives.

Is it possible to be attached to chewing gum?
Q. I can't stop chewing gum. My favorite brands are Orbit, Extra, Trident, and Koolerz. I can chew a enitre pack in one day. I guess it helps me a lot when I am stressed. I know people who can't stop smoking, or drinking. What should I do? All of the gum I chew is sugarfree.

A. Why do you want to stop chewing gum? It's not bad for you, in fact many dentists reccomend chewing sugar free gum after meals because it cleans your teeth. If it helps you reduce your stress level keep on chewing. If you really do want to stop you could probably use the same methods that cigarette smokers use, except nicorette of course. It is possible to be "attached " or addicted to anything!
