What exercises work well to shred your abs?
Q. Any good exercises besides the normal-everyday ab exercises? I mean, everyone has their own tricks and exercises that work for them. Any tips?
Asked by Michael C - Wed May 21 18:31:38 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Most important little trick you can do? Do any of the exercises, crunches, sit ups, butterflies, whatever, but keep your lower back pressed into the floor at all times. I mean like hold it down, you'll notice you won't be able to work out as long or do as many. It's really hard, but this builds your core strength, which helps you stand taller and helps from back-pain too! Not enough people know how important it is, but it REALLY helps! Also try taking some Pilates classes! All they do is focus on the core muscles and they teach a LOT of new moves to help!

What type of exercises or workouts will increase the size of my quads?
Q. I have skinny upper legs. Since not enough fat seems to accumulate there, I want to know of an exercise that will increase the size of my muscle in that area. If anyone knows of some specific exercises that can help me achieve what I want please let me know. If it is an exercise I can do at home or without buying any special or costly equipment that would be best. NOTE: I am not looking for an exercise that will TONE that area. A. The king of exercises, squats, is the best quadriceps exercise. It also develops your core very well, and your glutes. If you don't have access to weights, that's fine. Find a ball of some kind and do a 'braced' squat -- hold the ball directly out from your chest, squat down (keep your back straight, sit back on your heels, go down as far as you can) and hold that position briefly, then stand again. Or you can simply put your hands on top of your head, or to your sides for balance.

A. It's been a while since I have trained for baseball, but as far as hitting goes along with weight training I remember that we focused mostly on the small muscle groups with light free weights, working more on quickness than anything. You would also want to work on your legs that is where a large amount of your power is coming from. More than anything though as others have said get some quality time in the cage and work on building good habits with your swing.

A. A gentle exercise you can do, either as a warm up to more strenuous exercise or in its own right, involves standing on the trampoline with your feet about shoulder-width apart. Gently, without lifting your heels or your toes from the trampoline, use the spring of the trampoline pad itself to move you up and down. This gentle exercise will not make you short of breath, and is not strenuous enough to make you sweat; but requires co-ordination and gentle muscle exertion. Continue for as long as you wish for maximum benefit. Vertical Spring In this exercise, which provides general toning throughout your muscles and helps you to clean toxins from your lymphatic system, you literally spring up from the centre of the trampoline in one movement - [cont.]

Q. I want to slim my thighs, but I don't know what exercises to do. I want to get rid of the bit of fat surrounding them without making my muscles huge. What exercises will help me get lean hot legs and thighs?

A. If you're trying to get rid of fat then you'll have to burn it off which means you'll have to sweat. Lunges and squats are great as a complement to your cardio. The cardio will burn the fat and then the toning and strengthening exercises will make the muscles strong and into high calorie burn shape. Running, jumping rope, jumping jacks, burpees, mountain climbers... these are all great cardio exercises that you can combine into a routine for yourself to really challenge your body depending on your fitness level. Examples of the exercises and even some good routines can be found on Youtube :o) Don't forget to stretch before and after you exercise and if you really want that long, lean look.. incorporate some yoga into your routine :o)… [cont.]

A. Do a a quick circuit and if you have good form do compound movements. Move from one exercise to the next taking little to no break. Something like: squats, chest press, lat pull down, leg curl, flies, and rows. Six exercises and you hit your whole body. In and out quick.

A. Funny you should ask that. I asked that of my doctor just last week because I injured my ankle and am trying to get my blood pressure back down with exercise and he recommended chair dancing. His wife bought this originally off QVC. The lady who created this series is actually a dancer and developed it after breaking her foot. You can get an idea of the exercises by seeing the short video online at the link below without actually buying anything. Just use your own bouncy music. All you need is a straight backed chair.

How many types of exercises for one muscle group should i do?
Q. I am working a lot on my chest. I am doing 3 sets of 10 reps of bench press, and 2 machines that also my chest (3 sets of 10). I do this exercise every other day. However, when I look for chest workouts online, most of them have 5-6 different chest exercises to do in ONE session. Am I still going to see results after about a month which just doing those 3 exercises I mentioned for my chest?
Asked by yankeeshall27 - Sun Feb 25 21:09:36 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. If you are doing just your chest that day try adding more exercises in. The chest is a big muscle and needs to be worked in different ways and angles. Try incline presses with dumbells or decline presses, flys. It will get all the different angles you need to work in the chest, but when focusing on the chest you need to make sure you work on your back or you are going to get the rounded shoulders look where your chest is so tight it pulls your shoulders towards the front. You see this a lot in guys that lift in the weight room focusing on chest and shoulders. You should actually use a ratio of 2 pulling exercises for every pushing exercise you do to prevent this and ensure a good muscle balance.

A. 1)Train them first in the workout. Most people train calves at the end of a thigh workout, so the effort is just not there. Train them on arm day, before arms, and watch them jolt into new growth. Don't worry, your arms won't shrink into oblivion. 2)Use the appropriate reps for the exercise. The number of reps depends on which exercise you're doing. In exercises where you bend your knee, most of the load is taken by the soleus, which is one of what kinesiologists call the antigravity muscles-that is, the muscles that are firing when you're in a standing position. Muscle biopsies and autopsies have revealed that the soleus is composed of approximately 88 percent slow-twitch muscle, meaning it responds better to high reps. Sets that you… [cont.]

What weightlifting exercises to increase my vertical jump?
Q. I love basketball, and I am able to nip the rim with my middle finger. I have done no leg exercises before besides play basketball. So I believe that working on my leg muscles at the gym can greatly change that. What leg exercises/workouts are great for increasing my vertical jump? FYI, I'm 5'10" in hopes of dunking one day.

A. What up brotha. I'm 5'11 and I can dunk but I was fortunate enough to have God give me the ability to jump. What I do is not drink soda or eat fatty foods because I promise you thats what really will ruin your progress. I do yoga, stability ball, prison squats, and the plank (with different variations). Make sure to stretch well before playing and so warm ups by just shooting around for a bit. Maybe incorporate jumping rope and toe raises with weights. Otherwise stand underneath the rim, and jump as high as you can ten times at the rim. I did that with jumpsoles though. All you can do is keep in shape and the jumping will evolve. Check out menshealth.com... they always have good advice. Alright man good luck with it all. Dunking… [cont.]

What are the best exercises to build large pecs?
Q. I've been working out a lot recently on my arms, and I've been seeing results; however, when I try to do chest exercises, I don't seem to be building that much if anything there. What are good exercises to build mass and bulk up in the chest area? Just a general rule of thumb would be nice, but what would you consider to be the chest exercise that optimizes results?
Asked by peexinxmyxpants - Thu Dec 11 15:47:05 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. There should be method in training those pectoralis muscles. The overall shape and development of the chest is a product of the exercises you choose and how those exercises are incorporated into your overall chest workout. Ignoring certain exercises or concentrating solely on one type of chest exercise can lead you to pec imbalances. The most common type of "imbalance" with the chest is deficient upper pec development. This is common in those individuals who fail to incorporate incline bench presses into their training or save them until the end of their chest workout, when the clock has struck twelve and their chest has turned into a pumpkin. There are 3 distinct regions within the muscle that will develop depending upon the exercises… [cont.]

A. You can do some interval training with dumbbells. It is much more effective that the normal sit-up's and crunches because it burns fat much faster. Have a look at my source for an example of such training. The exercise illustrated in my source would be perfect for you, because you can do it in your room and it can take 20 minutes to complete. If you want faster results, look at the interval running exercise just below the dumbbell training. Do this along with the other exercise as often as you can. Maybe do the dumbbell routine on Mon, Wed and Fri and do the running on Tue and Thursday. This running exercise also takes about 20 minutes. For even faster results, compliment your training with some clever food choices to help burn fat even… [cont.]
